Overview

Designing a Digital Economy for Rare Earth Commodities

Rush, a Sydney-based Fintech start-up explored the idea of a digital app that will enable users to buy, sell, send, gift, and spend rare earth metal commodities such as gold and silver.

Problem

One of the key design challenges was making these complex financial functions intuitive and easy to use. There was also a heavy focus on user onboarding, given that Rush had multiple account types with different requirements.

Simplifying the design: The core functionality of the Rush Gold app was inherently complex due to the volatile nature of gold prices and multiple transaction methods. Our design solution included consolidating the buy, sell, send, and spend flows into a cohesive interface, where users could manage all actions within a single view. By leveraging a modular UI, we enabled users to conduct gold transactions effortlessly, while dynamic visual elements helped illustrate price fluctuations in real time.

The introduction of the Rush Mastercard, which converted gold into fiat currency in real-time, added another layer of complexity. We tackled this by mirroring familiar digital wallet interfaces- allowing users to feel comfortable navigating this innovative feature.

Similarly, the Borrow feature allowed users to leverage their gold assets as collateral to borrow cash. We designed this feature to be simple and transparent, showing clear visualisations of how much gold was staked and the corresponding loan amount.

Rush Mastercard

The Rush Mastercard was another groundbreaking feature, allowing users to spend gold in real-time, with automatic conversions to local currency. Through thoughtful UX design, we made this intricate feature feel as familiar as using a debit card, bridging the gap between physical assets and digital transactions.

The ‘Borrow’ feature was also carefully crafted to empower users with instant access to cash by leveraging their gold, reducing the friction of selling their assets.

Reflection

Working on the Rush project was an intense but deeply rewarding experience, pushing me to expand my problem-solving skills in the realms of both UX and client management. At the heart of the project, we needed to create a user experience that simplified intricate financial processes which meant breaking down complicated financial systems into digestible, intuitive flows. It taught me once again that, ultimately, finding the balance between a client's vision and correct UX principles is really key.

Ultimately, this project reaffirmed the importance of maintaining a balance between the client’s vision and sound UX principles. The real success came from our ability to advise on best practices, and continuously improve the product experience. It was a challenge that refined my skills as both a designer and a communicator.
